Infusion Therapy with Aminofusin

Abstract
Aminofusin (Pfrimmer Co. England) is a fortified infusion solution with 18 essential and nonessential amino acids, carbohydrates (xylitol and sorbitol), electrolytes and vitamins. Aminofusin L 300 contains 25g of amino acids and 50g of carbohydrates per liter and L600 contains double concentration of each components.
This high caloric carbohydrate-nitrogen infusion had been tested by many investigators and was
recommended for a long term parenteral nutrition solution in fasting patients such as postoperative patienst of severe illness.
We have conducted a clinical study of the Aminofusin infusion therapy on four severely ill postoperative patients; two with liver abscess, one with bleeding duodenal ulcer and the other with ruptured gall bladder empyema.
Aminofusin infusion, average 3000m1 per day, was started on the first post-operative day and was continued for 4 to 6 days.
The work sheet listed measurement of body weight, liver function batteries, electrolytes, urinary studies and plasma osmolality.
The results are shown on the tables and are also summarized as follows;
1. The body weight initially decreased by average 2.2kg during the immediate postoperative period but returned to the preoperative weight by 8th post-operative day.
2. The blood sugar level rose from 90mg/100ml of preoperative level to 110mg/100ml by the 6th postoperative day.
3. The serum protein averaged to 6. lg/100ml at the preoperative period but dipped to 5.8g/100ml at the initial postoperative day and returned to 6.8g/100ml with albumin 3 5g/100ml by the 6th postoperative day.
4. The disequilibriated serum electrolyte level also became equilibriated by the infusion therapy for 6 to 8 days.
5. Aminofusin infusion therapy was also effective cn adjusting the plasma osmolality to normal.
